Microsoft announces July 15 deprecation of the Remote PowerShell (RPS) protocol

Microsoft announced in December 2022 that the Security and Compliance module in Exchange Online PowerShell will deprecate the Remote PowerShell (RPS) protocol. Microsoft today clarified the deprecation time starting on July 15, 2023.

Microsoft’s official announcement is as follows:

In the drive to modernize workflows, the security and compliance management experience is moving to REST-based cmdlets.

The new REST API provides the exact same cmdlets, giving RPS v1 cmdlets full functionality like parity without requiring updates to existing scripts and processes.

Administrators can switch to REST-based cmdlets immediately, and it is recommended to follow the instructions to do so as soon as possible.

According to Microsoft, a subset of eDiscovery cmdlets (17 in total) are not yet supported by the REST API, and support is currently estimated to be implemented by June 1, 2023. Until then, administrators need to continue to use RPS for these specific cmdlets.
