Micron says it plans to launch its first GDDR7 memory chip in the first half of next year.
According to the report, the new model is expected to offer higher performance than GDDR6X, but it requires a new controller and GPU support.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra reportedly said, “We plan to launch our next-generation G7 product at an industry-leading 1ß node in the first half of 2024.”
According to the media, the official launch of the new memory does not necessarily mean that it will be immediately adopted commercially. Because GDDR7 uses a completely different code than GDDR6 or GDDR6X, it will require a whole new memory controller and GPU.
Samsung also teased its GDDR7 memory at the Samsung Technology Day 2022 event last October, saying it could reach 36Gbps.
In addition, earlier this year, Cadence revealed that GDDR7 memory will use PAM3 encoding technology. Compared to GDDR6 (which uses PAM2), GDDR7 is expected to have higher bandwidth without the complexity and higher power consumption associated with GDDR6X (which uses PAM4).
