Meta Quest 3 unveiled with screen upgrades, color perspective and hand tracking support

That Meta Corporation (formerly Facebook) today released the Quest 3 headset, which is the successor to the Quest 2, the best-selling VR headset in history. The starting price of Quest 3 is US$499.99, which is US$200 higher than the previous generation, but the new product uses a more powerful Qualcomm chip, a better screen, and supports “color perspective” “Function. Quest 3 is now available for pre-order and will ship on October 10th.

There are big improvements on the hardware side of the Quest 3, and the body is slimmer and lighter thanks to new Pancake lenses. And using a new headband, the top strap is divided into two, which can better distribute the weight on the user’s head. However, the weight of the entire headset has increased slightly, reaching 515 grams. Meta says the Quest 3 has been redesigned to be more comfortable to wear. The speakers on the device have also been improved and provide a high-quality audio experience with less sound leakage.

The Quest 3 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, with 8GB of built-in memory, and Meta says its graphics performance is twice that of the Quest 2 and even better than the Quest Pro, which runs the previous-generation XR2 chip. The Quest 3 with 128GB of storage costs $499.99 (currently about 3,648 yuan), and the 512GB version costs $649.99 (currently about 4,751 yuan).

The Quest 3 has an LCD display in front of each eye with a resolution of 2064×2208, up from the Quest 2’s 1832×1920, which should make it easier to read text within the headset, and the screen supports a 90Hz / 120Hz refresh rate. The horizontal field of view of Quest 3 is 110 degrees, and the vertical field of view is 96 degrees, which is about 15% more than Quest 2 and slightly better than Pro. Users can use the wheel on the outside of the headset to adjust the lenses to adapt to the interpupillary distance. . Meta says the Quest 3’s battery life is about two hours and twelve minutes, which is consistent with the Quest 2’s.

The most important hardware difference between Quest 3 and its predecessor is the cameras: two new full-color cameras on the front of the new headset offer much improved color see-through capabilities. Qualcomm says the XR2 Gen 2 has an average see-through latency of just 12 milliseconds, which is on par with Apple’s Vision Pro, but the company also stresses that this depends on the image resolution its partners’ devices are trying to transmit. Users can choose to use the Quest 3 in two modes: a fully immersive VR mode or a so-called “hybrid” mode, which allows you to see both the real-world environment and what you’re looking at. any games or content. To switch between the two modes, use the controller or tap the headset twice to toggle. Quest 3 can also scan a room’s environment so the app can warn you if you’re about to hit something around you.

In addition, Quest 3’s Touch Plus handle eliminates the large positioning ring and instead uses infrared sensors for positioning, which also provides better tactile feedback. Quest 3 also supports hand tracking, so it can be controlled without using a controller.

Quest 3 is still a gaming-focused headset, and all games from Quest 2 will be playable on the new headset, as will games like Roblox, Assassin’s Creed Nexus, and Wrath of Asgard 2. Log into the new device.
