Meta Quest 3 headset teardown: battery takes up most of the space

Meta Company recently launched its latest virtual reality headset Quest 3. In order to explore the internal structure and repair difficulty of this device, the iFixit team disassembled it.

Compared with Quest 2, the biggest change of Quest 3 is that its body is 40% thinner. This is due to the use of pancake lenses, which greatly shortens the distance between them and the display. The Quest 3 also has a larger battery — 19.44Wh, compared to the Quest 2’s 14Wh — to power its more powerful chips and sensors, including two color cameras, four tracking cameras, and a depth sensor.

iFixit’s teardown shows that as the body becomes thinner, the battery becomes larger. After removing the front panel, you can see that the battery takes up most of the internal space. The Quest 3’s body (without mask and headband) weighs 397 grams, and the battery accounts for a sizeable chunk of that.

It is noticed that some other head-mounted devices, such as Quest Pro and Pico 4, put the battery in the rear headband to reduce the weight of the face, while Apple’s Vision Pro directly uses an external battery, which can completely reduce the weight of the head.

The iFixit team also did a teardown of the Quest Pro last year. Interestingly, they discovered that the Quest 3’s depth sensor fits right into a slot that was vacated on the Quest Pro. In fact, this slot was originally reserved for a depth sensor, but Meta removed it a few months before release. . iFixit says the cable on the depth sensor even matches the connector on the Quest Pro motherboard.

iFixit gave the Quest 3 a repairability score of 4 out of 10, saying the device lacked repair manuals, spare parts and repair-aware design.
