Meta’s latest Quest 3 virtual reality headset is available in two versions: the version with 128GB storage capacity is priced at US$499; the other is 512GB storage capacity, priced at US$650. However, many users are dissatisfied with the storage capacity of the entry version, believing that 128GB is too little to meet the needs of VR games and media.
The starter version of Meta Quest 3 only has about 100GB of free space because system software takes up some of it. While most virtual reality games only require 1-3GB of space, there are some popular games that require more space, such as Resident Evil 4 and Red Matter 2 (both 8GB), Iron Man VR (10GB ), “The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners 2” (12GB). Moreover, the life cycle of Quest 3 has just begun, and virtual reality games optimized for the new headset will also take up more storage space, which means users may need to frequently uninstall games to free up space.
The same problem existed with its predecessor, the Quest 2, where the entry-level version of the device initially came with just 64GB of storage, which was later bumped up to 128GB a year after launch.
The Quest 3 doesn’t offer 256GB of storage, which Meta says is primarily a cost-saving measure.
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth explained it this way during his recent Instagram Q&A session: “I know it’s a more expensive headset, but storage is a huge percentage of the overall cost. So. We want to provide a relatively low-cost version on the market, which is 128GB. For people who mainly stream from PC or use this device for social or some work purposes, they may not need more storage, So we think 128GB is a great option. Also, for those who are using this device as a standalone immersive gaming device and want more storage, we hear them (512GB) .So, this is all taking into account market demand, and the current sales data also proves this.”
For those who want to store a lot of immersive videos on their Quest 3 in addition to gaming, I recommend biting the bullet and getting the 512GB version. Or wait a year and see if Meta will upgrade the base version of Quest 3 to 256GB.
