According to the news announced by the official micro signal of Duyun No. 1 Middle School, on September 2, Huawei Vice Chairman, Rotating Chairman and CFO Meng Wanzhou came to Duyun City, Guizhou, to have a lesson with the teachers and students of Duyun No. 1 Middle School and Duyun No. 3 Elementary School of his alma mater, and delivered a speech on the theme of “read a thousand volumes, coffee a thousand cups”.
Meng said, “Life is a classroom everywhere, everyone can be my teacher, and life is an examination room everywhere”. She encouraged young students to have an open mind, stay curious about the unknown, keep learning, and reap different excitement in the process of solving and solving problems. Meng mentioned that there are all kinds of cafes in Huawei’s campuses across the country, where you may run into company executives being interviewed; you may see foreign faces sharing their views in fluent Chinese; or you may find a group of young people deducing formulas on a whiteboard and debating fiercely because of differences in views.
Even though the company has encountered unprecedented challenges in recent years, we have built many campus libraries and cafes, and still maintain our investment in employee motivation, honorary recognition, and a thriving campus.
We firmly believe that the primary value creation for technology companies is innovation, and the source of innovation comes from the energy and creativity of our employees. The future is not saved, but created by continuous investment and hard work. The hot discussion and the collision of thinking sparks are often the source of inspiration and the starting point of climbing up the ladder. Today, we have set up “Huang Danian Tea Thinking House” in many university campuses or near universities.
We encourage our employees to get out of the office, have coffee and talk with university professors and researchers, and discuss the direction and future of the industry, and even the technical problems faced by the whole society.
We encourage every employee to read more, think better, and argue, to gain wisdom from the long and brilliant human civilization, to find the direction of breakthrough from others and the excellent practice of the industry, and to open the ceiling of thinking, which is the “point” of openness.

Meng also shared a particularly interesting example: more than 20 years ago, there was a young man in Huawei’s Russian Institute of Mathematics who was engaged in algorithm research. It can be said that he was one of the few “talented youngsters” hired by Huawei with high salaries in the early days. Because he was reluctant to leave his hometown in Russia, Huawei set up a local math institute in Russia to keep him. After he joined Huawei, he did not like to interact with people, but spent his days fiddling with computers, playing games, and occasionally doing some research in mathematics.
For a long time, he seemed to be bored and did not have any scientific achievements. But this is such a “weird” genius, after ten years of breaking the algorithm problems from 2G to 3G, Huawei also based on this achievement, launched a Single RAN solution for the European market, gradually overtake our competitors.
The “weird minority”, which is hard to understand, may have a talent that is hard to surpass in some aspects. “The way we employ people is to use their strengths and make the best use of their talents.
The main character of the second short story graduated from Tsinghua University in 2016 with a master’s degree in chemistry. He joined Huawei and worked in software coding and development. He said that the change of track was born out of love. In one programming session, he realized the similarities between writing code and chemistry experiments, both of which require detailed design in a scenario full of uncertainties, fully considering variable factors and starting with the end in mind. Not only did his interdisciplinary expertise not affect his ability to become a coder, but his solid chemistry background also gave him a different way of thinking and problem-solving ability.
In fact, Huawei has many such interdisciplinary research talents. What Huawei values is their solid accumulation of basic disciplines and innovative problem-solving mindset. Huawei’s early power development team had a mainstay who used to be a dentist.
Huawei is currently enduring and facing unprecedented challenges, which rushed all the way back and forth, a hundred turns. And we, from the journey to the long journey of the impermanence to the fearlessness of the shekels, from the chance of no retreat to the inevitable road to victory. The new long march, we take the dream as a horse, the first heart like a rock.
In the face of suppression, is it better to retreat or continue to open up? How do we ensure the continuity of business when advanced components and advanced elements are not available? Breakthroughs in basic theory and fundamental research are still a long way to go, how do we make more valuable contributions and how do we let the lighthouse light of science and technology continue to lead the way?
The root of solving all issues and problems lies in talents. From childhood to adulthood, we have experienced countless examinations, and we face different examinations at each stage. When we study, the school and teachers will give us questions; after graduation, the times and society will give us questions; when we don’t want to follow the old ways, satisfy the status quo or resign ourselves to the mercy of fate, we will give ourselves questions and live a different and exciting life tenaciously.
