As we all know, Intel announced last year to return to the foundry market, the establishment of the IFS department wants to grab the market with TSMC, Samsung, today MediaTek announced cooperation with Intel, using the latter’s 16nm process to foundry part of the chip. Considering that it is one of TSMC’s major customers, this move is seen as MediaTek also looking for a spare tire, to transfer foundry orders to other companies, the industry is expected to be the most affected by TSMC.
TSMC today did not respond to the cooperation between MediaTek and Intel, but stressed that MediaTek is a long-term customer of TSMC and has a close partnership in advanced processes, which will not affect the business relationship between the two sides.
According to the details of MediaTek’s cooperation with Intel, Intel has also developed a new “Intel 16” process specifically for MediaTek, that is, Intel 16nm, based on 22nm FFL improvements, which is a very mature process.
MediaTek’s 16nm chip is expected to begin mass production in early 2023, although the specific details were not announced, but the 16nm process can basically rule out the possibility of OEM MediaTek’s Tiangui 5G processor, which is still partly dependent on TSMC’s advanced process, which is also the key to TSMC said not to be affected.
