Mazda USA CEO: Users will find out later that they don’t actually need such a long-range electric car

With the introduction of the new CX-90, Mazda hopes to start redefining the image of its models. The flagship crossover is more powerful and more luxurious than the previous-generation CX-9 it replaces.

Jeffrey Guyton, CEO of Mazda USA, said that while buyers today are relatively interested in all-electric vehicles in the 300-mile (482 km) range class, consumers in the future will find that they don’t actually need that much range and that long-range all-electric vehicles are not sustainable from a resource-limited perspective.

He said in an interview with Green Car Reports that range anxiety may be a major concern for first-time buyers, but as soon as they own multiple electric vehicles, they will understand that there is no need to worry. At the same time, as public charging infrastructure continues to improve, the charging speed of electric vehicles will also see a significant increase, and the user experience will be enhanced.

Guyton hopes that in the future, public fast-charging stations will be available for people to use anywhere, anytime. He asserts that we have the resources available to make this possible, and urges that it must be a priority.

He said that future battery packs will be smaller and lighter, offering shorter ranges, but faster charging and weight gain or loss for trucks with a range of over 300 miles are his concerns and argues that this is unsustainable because resources for raw materials such as lithium batteries are limited.

The latest news also includes the possibility that Mazda will work with third parties to build a charging network as new vehicles are introduced on the pure electric platform in the future, although Mazda will not build the charging infrastructure and network independently.

Mazda has never seemed particularly aggressive about electric vehicles, and the brand’s current pure electric model sold in the North American market is the MX-30, which has an EPA range of just 100 miles (161 km), a level not even as good as some of our miniature pure electric cars. However, Mazda also plans to launch its electric vehicle exclusive platform architecture in the future, but the specific time is unknown.
