Matter 1.0 smart home standard released, Apple iOS 16.1 to support

The Connectivity Standards Alliance, whose members include Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and other smart home manufacturers, today announced the official launch of the Matter 1.0 smart home accessory standard.

Companies that have agreed to support Matter now have all the resources they need to begin implementing it on their platforms, and it is expected that Apple will soon integrate Matter into HomeKit. In fact, iOS 16.1 has already laid the groundwork for Matter, so Matter will likely be announced as the update rolls out.

Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, said: “Matter has been born as a mission to unlock the complexity of connectivity, a single, IP-based global protocol that will fundamentally change the Internet of Things. This release is the first step in our community and industry’s journey to make the Internet of Things simpler, safer and more valuable, no matter who you are or where you live. With the support of companies large and small around the world, today’s Matter 1.0 release is more than just a milestone for our organization and our members.”

With the release of Matter 1.0, product certification is now available for authorized test labs, tools are available and the open source reference design SDK is complete. Alliance members who have devices already deployed and plan to update their products with Matter support will be able to do so once their products are certified.

Matter is an IoT standard designed to improve the interoperability of smart devices between brands, so HomeKit devices can be used with other smart home devices from Google, Amazon, and others. matter works over Wi-Fi, which allows smart home devices to communicate with the cloud, and Thread, which provides energy-efficient and reliable The Matter works through Wi-Fi, which allows smart home devices to communicate with the cloud, and Thread, which provides energy-efficient and reliable mesh networking in the home.
