Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, talked about the price of the company’s newly announced Quest Pro VR headset in an interview on Tuesday, saying that the $1,499.99 pricing is just a “keeper” to allow more people to experience the metaverse by buying the hardware. Mark Zuckerberg also took the opportunity to take a dig at rival Apple, saying that Apple priced its devices “as high as possible.
He said, “Usually, people make hardware and then want to make a profit from it. That’s what Apple does, for example, is make hardware and then charge as much as they can.”
Mark Zuckerberg says he wants to go the other way.
“I do think there are still people who are going to come into this space and then realistically say, ‘We’re going to build the best hardware in this space, and we’re going to sell it at a guaranteed cost in some cases.'”
Mark Zuckerberg said that’s what Meta is doing with its latest VR headset, Quest Pro, priced at just $1,499.99. The company also eventually plans to launch Quest 3, priced between $300 and $500, he said.
Mark Zuckerberg believes Meta’s goal is to get as many users as possible into the metaverse.
“I think that business strategy is consistent with our mission, which is to connect people and get people there, because if you want to build a whole new social experience, you have to get people there.”
Zuckerberg said software and services are the areas where he really wants to make money.
