According to foreign technology media TechCrunch reported that network security researchers recently sampled Amazon’s hot-selling Android TV set-top box devices, from which malware was found.
The malware was pre-installed on AllWinner T95Max, RockChip X12 Plus and RockChip X88 Pro 10 set-top boxes, which typically use AllWinner and RockChip chips.
Researchers found malware on purchased T95 set-top box firmware connected to a large botnet. The botnet consists of thousands of other malware-infected Android TV boxes around the world.
After users purchase and use such set-top boxes, the malware embedded in the firmware clicks on ads in the background, generating revenue for the attackers.
