Linux 5.19 Kernel Boost, Ubuntu 22.04 Partial Performance Tests Catch Up with Win11

The Ubuntu 22.04 LTS was initially equipped with the Linux 5.15 kernel and is now available for upgrade to Linux 5.19. Recently, Phoronix compared Ubuntu 22.04 with Windows 11 on the same hardware after the kernel upgrade, so let’s see how each one performs.

What's new in Linux kernel 5.19? - Cloud7 News

The test was conducted on a Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 laptop with an AMD Radeon 7 PRO 6850U processor, Radeon 680M graphics, 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory and a 512GB Micron NVMe SSD.

First, the external media conducted a browser benchmark test. In Google Chrome, Linux 5.19 brought about a 50% performance improvement over Linux 5.15 under some tests such as WebXPRT, but not much improvement in tests such as Basemark.

In Firefox, a browser based on the Gecko engine, Linux 5.19 showed better performance, even outperforming Windows 11 in some tests.

Finally, in the game performance tests, the OpenGL performance of Windows 11 on AMD platform is still relatively bad, so it is definitely behind Linux. According to the test, under Vulkan, Windows 11’s Thor’s Hammer 2 game performance is far behind Linux, while under OpenGL it surprisingly performs well.
