LG Korea website and Korea Economic Daily reported that LG and South Korean AI sleep technology start-up Asleep are developing smart home appliances that can detect when users fall asleep and adjust accordingly, such as air conditioners. The room temperature can be optimized accordingly.
According to reports, Asleep’s AI technology can use devices with microphones, such as smart TVs and smartphones, to track the four sleep stages based on the sound of the user’s breathing. LG plans to incorporate the technology into other products such as TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, air purifiers and washing machines.
Based on user sleep information, these devices can turn on or off and optimize settings based on whether the user is asleep or not. LG’s Whisen air conditioner, for example, automatically adjusts and optimizes room temperature based on the sleep stage the user is in. Other devices, such as LG’s air purifier Aero Furniture, can switch to sleep mode if they detect that the user is not awake.
Asleep will also demonstrate its Sleeptrack API at next month’s CES 2023, a technology that measures sleep and passes the information to other companies’ products. The startup will also work with other companies such as Amorepacific to develop different products such as beauty and wellness devices.
LG will also be at CES 2023 and will showcase other technologies, including a new line of appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens and dishwashers that will omit unnecessary buttons and decorative elements in a bid to sell simplicity. These minimalist devices will be software upgradeable, and users can add new software features through the upgrade center in the LG ThinQ app.
“Upgradability challenges the idea that expensive appliances are designed with planned obsolescence in mind,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliances, when he unveiled LG’s upgradability program in January.
