Laptop memory to change dramatically: CAMM becomes next-generation replacing SO-DIMM

According to PC World, JEDEC will officially adopt “CAMM” as the next-generation laptop memory standard, replacing the current SO-DIMM memory.

JEDEC is reportedly working on a new notebook memory specification to replace the 25-year-old SO-DIMM memory standard, according to JEDEC committee member and Dell senior engineer Tom Schnell.

Tom Schnell built the original CAMM memory design for Dell last year, which was first used in the Precision 7770 mobile workstation, and JEDEC’s CAMM standard will be based on the Dell CAMM design, with the final specification likely to be different.

JEDEC aims to complete the 1.0 specification in the second half of 2023, with CAMM-based systems available next year, according to Tom Schnell, who said about 20 companies in the task force voted in favor of the solution and that acceptance has been very good. The first JEDEC CAMM memory modules should be available when SO-DIMM memory reaches 6400 MT/s and thus replaces SO-DIMM.

Tom Schnell envisioned a future for CAMM memory that would enable the high transfer speeds of LPDDR6 in the DDR6 era, while also supporting teardown upgrades.

Laptop memory now uses the SO-DIMM specification shown above and is now available in DDR5-5600 form factor and a single 32GB capacity. In contrast, CAMM allows for greater capacity and faster speeds.
