Lamborghini launched a brand new racing car named SC63, which will participate in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and American Motorsports Championship (IMSA) next year, and challenge the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The SC63 was presented to the public at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK by Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann and technical director Reuven Moll to mark the 60th anniversary of Lamborghini and the 10th anniversary of its motorsport division Squadra Corse. Named after 1963, the year Lamborghini was founded, the car will take on the likes of Toyota, Ferrari, Porsche and Glickenhaus at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2024.
The SC63 is based on a chassis supplied by the French company Ligier, one of four available in the Hypercar category. Lamborghini says the SC63 embodies the brand’s three core philosophies: hybridization, aerodynamics and design.
The SC63’s hybrid powertrain consists of a new bespoke 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine and a single-spec electric motor, limited to 671 horsepower under LMDh (Le Mans Daytona Hybrid Events) regulations. Since all models use the same specifications, engineering has focused on “reliability, drivability and efficiency,” Moore said.
The minimum weight for a car in the LMDh class is 1030kg and Maul did not give an official figure but said it was as close as possible.
The launch of the SC63 is also important, as it marks a turning point in Lamborghini’s electrification strategy, with the brand planning to launch a hybrid version of the Urus and an electric successor to the Huracán in 2024.
