Krafton: PUBG Mobile is very popular after it is free and Callisto Protocol

PUBG developer Krafton released its latest financial report. The company has acquired Neon Giant, the developer of Uplink Battlefield, and it was revealed that the newly acquired Swedish studio is currently developing a new open-world FPS game.

In addition, Krafton is also planning to set up a major studio in Canada that will lead the development of the IP for the fantasy novel “The Bird Who Drank Tears” by acclaimed author Lee Yong-do, no further details of which were provided at this time.

In terms of financial results, this year has been the most financially successful year for PUBG Quest since 2019. The company announced that it achieved KRW 433.8 billion (roughly RMB 2.3 billion) in revenue in the third quarter of 2022, up 2 percent sequentially, with profits up 17 percent.

Krafton noted that PUBG Quest’s revenue surged in the third quarter of 2022 due to the constant influx of new players since the game went free, with PC revenue up 48 percent from the previous quarter and quarterly revenue from console platforms up 22 percent from the previous quarter, more than double compared to last year.

As for handheld games, mobile platform revenue was about RMB 1.482 billion, but down 26 percent year-over-year since 2021. Krafton said most of the success came from cross-border tie-ups, such as soccer player partnerships.

Going forward, Krafton will release IoT Protocol on December 2 of this year. As one of the last massive games of 2022, it’s easy to see how Krafton has high hopes for the project.

Neon Giant’s first game is the cyberpunk-themed action role-playing game The Ascent, which arrived on Xbox and PC platforms in July last year, and then on PlayStation in March this year.

Krafton’s independent game development studios also include PUBG Studios (PUBG: Battlegrounds), Striking Distance Studios ( The Callisto Protocol) and Unknown Worlds (Subnautica).
