South Korea will unveil its next-generation network strategy next month in preparation for the commercialization of 6G mobile communications, the Korean media reported. The strategy is said to include a public-private partnership approach, in addition to a technical strategy for smart, converged and spatially expanded 6G networks. Sources familiar with the matter said that South Korea has been collecting various opinions and compiling content for the development of the next-generation network strategy since the first half of the year. The next-generation network strategy is expected to include a new technology strategy for the early commercialization of 6G.
In the 6G era, the network infrastructure will be extended from the ground to space. Because of this, the space network strategy is also expected to be included. South Korea will promote the establishment of a pilot network for 6G low-orbit satellite communications from 2026 onwards. In addition, Korea plans to launch the Open LAN Consortium in the near future to establish an early open LAN ecosystem.
In addition to the above strategy, Korea may also propose a public-private partnership strategy, whereby Korean mobile operators and manufacturers such as SK Telecom, KT, LG U+ and Samsung Electronics will work together to develop innovative 6G technologies and converged services. The public-private partnership will work together on technologies such as enhanced network security based on quantum cryptography, extended connectivity based on satellite network interoperability, and fault prediction management based on artificial intelligence. It also has the potential to develop new services including Urban Air Mobility (UAM), autonomous driving and metaverse.
