Kenya Issues Warning to Facebook to Address Hate Speech

0

On July 30, local time, Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission issued a warning to social media platform Facebook to address hate speech on its platform within seven days, or be suspended from operating in the country if Facebook continues to let this happen.

Some Kenyan agencies have found that Facebook failed to detect and placed ads containing hate speech in Swahili and English.

Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission said Facebook violated the country’s laws. In a statement, the commissioner of the commission said, “Facebook has allowed itself to be a vehicle for hate speech, inflammatory messages, misinformation and disinformation.”

Kenya is understood to be holding a presidential election on Aug. 9.
