Raytheon Carnival is about to launch this weekend, and one of the greats who has quite an affinity with id Software is still exploring the world of technology. John Carmack’s latest company is called Keen Technologies, a company focused on general artificial intelligence. On Friday, Carmack said his company had raised $20 million in funding.
Carmack announced the news on his personal Twitter account. According to media reports, the funding was provided by several big names in the tech sector, including GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, Cue founder Daniel Gross, Stripe co-founder and CEO Patrick Collison, Shopify co-founder and CEO Tobi Lutke, and Sequoia Venture Fund. Carmack said that after getting this investment, he will be more diligent in his work.
General AI is focused on developing machines that think like people and perform multiple purposes like people. As mainstream AI research is moving toward intelligence in one area (e.g., machine vision, voice input, etc.), the word general purpose has been added to the field to distinguish it from them.
Carmack specifically mentioned that he will still be involved in matters related to Meta’s VR project as an advisor.
