Jen-Hsun Huang: the high price of the NVIDIA RTX 4090 due to performance and design

After the release of RTX 40 series graphics cards, many users complain more about the price increase, for which NV has a different statement. “Today 12-inch wafers are much more expensive, not a little more expensive, is very, very much more expensive.” Huang Renxun said, “Now the technology is getting more and more expensive, so we have to use more approaches, inventions like RTX, DLSS, SCR, Tensor Cores so that we can continue to overcome the increase in cost.”

Another reason why Jen-Hsun Huang explains the significant price increase is that it’s latest RTX 4090 offers higher performance compared to the previous generation RTX 3000, not just double the performance of Moore’s Law. To achieve this performance leap, it’s not just the hardware; NVIDIA has invested heavily in the entire stack. “The future is about accelerating the full stack, and you have to come up with new architectures and come up with the best possible chip designs.

For NVIDIA’s next performance expectations, Huang also said bluntly that achieving twice the performance expectations at a similar cost is “a thing of the past” for the industry.

Moore’s Law is the prediction of Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore about innovation in the semiconductor industry, that is, the number of transistors integrated into a chip doubles about every 24 months, while the price drops to half of what it was before. Later, people shortened this cycle to 18 months.

Jen-Hsun Huang also spoke about the semiconductor supply chain, emphasizing that the world needs to recognize that the semiconductor supply chain is very complex. “It takes almost the entire world to make a cell phone, a car or a computer. The world’s most advanced organic substrate (substrate) comes from Japan, but it’s integrated into computers in China, the software is developed in the U.S., and so on. So it’s important to look at the supply chain from start to finish and realize how incredibly integrated the world has become.”
