Japan’s Fujitsu plans to design its own 2nm chip and entrust TSMC to manufacture it

The senior management of Japanese technology giant Fujitsu said that the company plans to design advanced semiconductors with a 2-nanometer process by itself, and intends to entrust TSMC to manufacture them.

According to the “Nihon Keizai Shimbun” report, Fujitsu Chief Technology Officer Vivek Mahajan said at a press conference on Tuesday that the company plans to design its own advanced semiconductors with a 2-nanometer process, and intends to entrust wafer foundry leader TSMC to produce them.

The report pointed out that Fujitsu aims to complete the energy-saving central processing unit (CPU) equipped with the chip as soon as 2026.

TSMC currently plans to mass-produce 2-nanometer chips in 2025. The company’s advanced process technology blueprint has only been revealed to 2 nanometers, while rival Samsung Electronics has announced that it will mass-produce 1.4-nanometer chips in 2027. In addition, Intel also revealed that the Intel 18A (equivalent to 1.8 nanometers) test chip will be trial-produced before the end of this year.
