iPhone 14 price hike in Korea, Apple responds rise of won against U.S. dollar

At its September “Far Out” event, Apple unveiled iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, retaining much of the design of the iPhone 13 — including The bangs notch for the phone’s selfie camera and Face ID sensor. Apple also unveiled iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max with a “Spirit Island” pill screen to show alerts and background activity, a brighter display and AOD display, an A16 bionic chip, new color options and more.

According to the official website of Apple in Korea, Apple’s newly released iPhone 14 series models are priced up to 330,000 won (about RMB 1,650) compared to the previous ones, so articles about going to foreign countries to buy or buying iPhones through proxy keep appearing in Korean social media. Apple said that the pricing of the new product in the U.S. is the same as the previous generation, but the price in Korea has increased significantly due to the rise in the exchange rate of the Korean won against the U.S. dollar.

Apple’s website shows that iPhone 14 in South Korea is priced from 1,250,000 won (about RMB 6,275) and iPhone 14 Plus is priced from 1,350,000 won (about RMB 6,777). The iPhone 14 Pro is priced from 1,550,000 KRW (about RMB 7,781) and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is priced from 1,750,000 KRW (about RMB 8,785).

The iPhone 14 series is up 160,000 won (about RMB 803.2) from the iPhone 13 model. iPhone 14 Pro is up 200,000 won (about RMB 1,004) from the previous generation, while iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple’s highest-end phone, is up 260,000 won (about RMB 1,305.2) from the previous generation. The iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple’s highest-end phone, is priced at 260,000 won (about RMB 1,305.2). And the iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB model is priced at a whopping KRW 2,500,000 (about RMB 12,550).

Consumers in Japan and South Korea will have to pay relatively more for the latest iPhone models this year compared to last year’s models, as both countries have seen their currencies depreciate significantly against the U.S. dollar.

According to Apple’s website, the iPhone 14 series is priced at 119,800 yen in Japan. That’s about 21 percent higher than the price of the iPhone 13, which was released a year ago. In contrast, the report says that despite historically high inflation, iPhone 14 is still priced at $799 in the U.S., the same as last year’s model. Also in China, the iPhone 14 series starting price remained the same as last year, starting at RMB 5,999.

Apple has increased the price of the iPhone 14 series in several other markets around the world. For example, iPhone 13 starts at £779 in the UK and iPhone 14 starts at £849 (about RMB 6,825.96); iPhone 13 starts at $1,349 in Australia and iPhone 14 starts at $1,399 (about RMB 6,555.67); iPhone 13 starts at 98,800 yen in Japan and iPhone 14 starts at 119,800 yen in Japan. iPhone 13 in Japan starts at 98,800 yen and iPhone 14 starts at 119,800 yen (approximately RMB 5786.34); iPhone 13 in Germany starts at 899 euros and iPhone 14 starts at 999 euros (approximately RMB 6963.03).
