Intel’s 24-core Sapphire Rapids Xeon W7-3455 test data revealed

The Intel Xeon Xeon W3400/2400 series processor will be released on February 16, as announced by Intel yesterday. Before the official release, the 24-core Xeon W7-3455 processor has already appeared in V-Ray, but the performance is slightly disappointing.

As you can see from this V-Ray screenshot shared by HXL, the 24-core Xeon W7-3455 loses out to the Zen3-based Threadripper Pro 5965WX in terms of performance, except that the former is a bit less power-hungry.

The Xeon W7-3455 scored 26175 points (average) in V-Ray with a core frequency of 3.08GHz. A more visual comparison, here are the scores of the i9-13900K and Ryzen 9 7950X, which are around 29000 points. This is a clear indication of poor Xeon CPU performance, and possibly an early engineering sample.

On the other hand, the Threadripper Pro 5965WX scored 30,700 points. That means that AMD’s previous generation is 15% faster than Intel’s next-generation workstation CPUs.

The Xeon W7-3455 will come with 24 cores/48 threads and 67.5MB of L3 cache. As a W-3400 product, it will feature a multi-chip design based on Intel’s 7 processes. Last but not least, the power consumption of this CPU is said to be 270W.
