Intel has been lagging behind AMD in terms of workstation CPUs since its rival Threadripper was introduced, but now Intel is ready to release its next-generation “Xeon” series of workstation processors, based on the same Eagle Stream platform as Sapphire Rapids.
According to Wccftech, the Intel Sapphire Rapids-WS and W790 platforms will be released in the seventh week of 2023 (sometime between February 12 and February 18) and will be available in April. This will be a major upgrade after the Ice Lake-SP series, comparing the latter with a maximum number of only 38 cores.
The new product, codenamed “Fishhawk Falls”, will reportedly feature a Quad Die tiled design with up to 56 physical cores.
Looking at Intel’s roadmap, the new generation of Xeon is divided into multiple product lines just like the Core series, such as Xeon W9, Xeon W7, Xeon W5 and Xeon W3. Each market segment has its own product needs.
As for the CPU family itself, the Intel Xeon W9 series will include 56-core and 36-core models with 105MB of cache, 350W TDP and 112 PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes.
In addition, the Xeon W5 series includes 28-, 24- and 20-core models with 75 MB of cache and 300W TDP, while the Xeon W3 class processors are only available in 16- and 12-core SKUs, along with 45 MB of cache and 270W TDP.
