Intel decides to cancel Meteor Lake-S desktop processor and delay TSMC 3nm order pull time

Up master @ECSM_Official last year broke the news that Intel will launch Raptor Lake Refresh processor in the third quarter of 2023, which should be August/September, still using the LGA1700 slot, compared to the current version of Raptor Lake main frequency will be higher 0.1 ~ 0.2GHz, but the number of cores remains the same.

Therefore, many digital enthusiasts believe that Intel’s move indicates that the next-generation Meteor Lake-S series is facing a setback, at least not in the form of a desktop version in 2023 as scheduled.

This scene seems to be a repeat of the previous 14nm switch to 10nm generation, as we expect only the 14th generation mobile processors to be upgraded to Meteor Lake this year, and then the high-performance desktop processors will be launched only after further polishing.

According to @OneRaichu, Intel has confirmed that it will cancel the desktop version of Meteor Lake, that is, the Meteor Lake-S series processors, and used to fill the demand for MPL-S series products is the previous sudden outbreak of “Raptor Lake Refresh The MPL-S series will be used to fill the demand for the MPL-S series products is the “Raptor Lake Refresh”, which suddenly broke out.

In addition, @OneRaichu also said that some of the axed MTL-S products will be replaced with MTL-P models (P series is a mobile platform product, positioning thin and light high-performance), where the GT1 series will use the 64EU iGPU.

According to another Digitimes report today, industry sources have revealed Intel’s decision to delay its previous 3nm chip orders from TSMC until the fourth quarter of 2024. Industry sources pointed out that Intel’s manufacturing process and PC platform blueprints have been revised frequently in recent years, and the delay in product launch has severely disrupted the supply chain’s production and marketing plans.

Intel’s route announced last year shows that Meteor Lake will come out in the second half of 2023, followed by Arrow Lake in 2024, when there will be Lunar Lake series products for low-power platforms.

According to materials previously shared by Intel, the new generation of Meteor Lake will use Intel 4 process and TSMC external process, and for the first time introduce a “Tile” modular design, integrating four small chips in a chip CPU, SOC, core graphics and IOE, and will use Foveros packaging Arrow Lake will be the first product to be built with Intel 20A, also using TSMC process, involving N3, N5 and N6.

As planned, the next generation of Meteor Lake processors will be the first to be based on the Intel 4 (7nm) process, which is the first Intel manufacturing process to use EUV lithography.

According to information shared by @OneRaichu, Intel’s Meteor Lake CPUs are based on the Redwood Cove and Crestmont architectures, and with the new generation of Intel 4 and TSMC, their performance and efficiency are expected to increase significantly, at least to the level of 1.5 times the performance to power ratio of the 13th generation Raptor Lake. At least the performance-to-power ratio is targeted to reach 1.5 times the level of the 13th-generation Raptor Lake.

In addition, since the new tGPU or Tiled-GPU architecture will include a new Xe GPU core, he believes (subjective prediction) that core graphics (128EU above 2.0GHz) on Gen 14 processors could reach 2x the performance level of the previous (96EU), with enhanced support for DirectX 12 Ultimate and XeSS.

According to @ECSM_Official, the new generation of Meteor Lake will combine TSMC’s N5+N6 process on the basis of Intel 4, limited to a maximum of 6P+16E configuration, while Arrow Lake will combine N3+N5+N6 three processes, and the high-end models will use Intel 20A, which means that some of the ARL models may be completely adopted That is to say, some of the ARL models may be completely OEM’d by TSMC.

For Intel’s future roadmap, we can currently see that Intel Intel 4 will introduce EUV lithography for the first time, compared to Intel 7 performance per watt increased by 20%, the first application products are Meteor Lake and Granite Rapids. follow-up, Intel is more focused on Intel 20A node compared to the optimized Intel 3 node, but currently far from We are all still too far away, both the roadmap and the news are quite variable.

In addition, there are rumors that Intel’s next-generation LGA 1851 slot will support three generations of products, if not including Meteor Lake-S, then possibly Arrow Lake-S, Arrow Lake Refresh and Panther Lake (or Nova Lake-S), the source is no longer available, for reference only.

Intel had confirmed at its earnings meeting last October that Intel 4 was moving toward high-volume production, with Meteor Lake flow expected to be completed in the fourth quarter, the final step in moving the 14th generation Core processors from the design phase into early production.

Of course, although the roadmap looks good, but Intel has not had a good time recently, even last quarter earnings turned into a loss. Due to the rapid decline in revenue and profits, Intel also previously announced layoffs and cuts in management compensation across the company, CEO Kissinger’s base pay will be reduced by 25%, Intel’s executive leadership team’s base pay will be reduced by 15%.

In fact, Intel’s market situation in recent years, although firmly dominant but has been in the doldrums, and even the market value has been overtaken by AMD. Despite cost-cutting strategies such as staff streamlining, the company is still not favored by investors in the face of a weak PC market and increased competition from AMD, and the company itself expects to remain in the red in the first quarter of 2023.

The source interviewed by Digitimes said that the PC market is expected to remain weak throughout this year, and even Intel’s major product launches may not be able to stimulate demand.

According to previous known information, Intel’s next-generation processors will use TSMC manufacturing side of the partnership will be delayed until the fourth quarter of 2024 to manufacture GFX tile for Arrow Lake, while Panther Lake and Nova Lake are expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2025 and 2026, respectively.
