Institution: Q2 total global desktop and notebook computer shipments were 70.2 million units, an average annual decrease of 15.0%

On July 14, the latest data from Canalys showed that total desktop and laptop shipments were 70.2 million units in the second quarter of 2022, a 15.0% annual decline and the lowest sales since the first outbreak closure in the first quarter of 2020.

In the second quarter of 2022, laptop shipments declined for the third consecutive quarter, falling 18.6 percent to 54.5 million units as education purchases remained sluggish compared to the same period last year. In contrast, shipments grew slightly by 0.6 percent to 15.6 million units as countries increased openness and strong business demand spurred desktop updates and upgrades, and the high-end commercial segment will remain a bright spot in the overall PC market this year despite severe global macroeconomic pressures ahead.

Lenovo shipped 17.5 million units in the second quarter of 2022, down 12 percent, but still ranked first in the global PC market, according to the data. HP’s shipments for the education market performed poorly this year compared to last year, with total shipments of 13.5 million units, down 28 percent, the largest drop among the top five vendors. Dell followed HP in third place, with shipments of 13.2 million units, a relatively mild decline of only 5 percent. Compared with a year ago, market share increased by 2 percentage points. Acer and Asus were fourth and fifth, down 19 percent and 5 percent, respectively.
