India is already pushing ahead with the deployment of 5G networks, with full deployment estimated to be completed by 2024. According to the latest figures from popular internet testing company Ookla, Indian operator Jio has the fastest 5G speeds at 598.58Mbps, compared to rival Airtel’s 197.98Mbps in Delhi, although this should drop as 5G rolls out across India.
Analysis shows that Indian telecom operators have been testing their networks ahead of the 1 October launch, with 5G speeds ranging between 16.27Mbps and 809.94Mbps. This suggests that telcos are recalibrating their networks.
The popular internet testing company Ookla has brought out a new report on 5G data speeds in India. According to the analysis, Jio’s network speed is 598.58Mbps, while Airtel’s network speed in Delhi is 197.98Mbps.
Since June 2022, Ookla has recorded 5G download speeds in four metropolitan cities, including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Varanasi. In popular cities like Mumbai, Airtel trails Jio with a download speed of 271.07Mbps, while the latter has a faster download speed of 515.38Mbps.
The speed difference between the two telecom networks is greatest in Kolkata. Airtel’s median download speed was 33.83 Mbps, while Jio’s was faster at 482.02 Mbps. We expect these speeds to become more consistent as these networks enter the commercial phase,” said Sylwia Kechiche, chief industry analyst at Ookla Enterprises. “.
