Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology of India, gave a speech on Thursday that the government will take mandatory measures to require smartphone manufacturers to integrate India’s local satellite navigation system NavIC.
He later added that there are two integration options, one using a NavIC-enabled chip, and the other directly using the NavIC chipset.
He said that it will be mandatory for 5G mobile phones to support NavIC before January 1, 2025; other mobile phones using the GPS L1 band will need to provide NavIC support before December 2025.
The full name of India’s NavIC is called the Indian Regional Satellite Navigation System. There are currently 7 satellites in space, and ISRO’s goal is to increase it to 12 in the next few years.
