In response to EU’s Digital Services Act, Elon Musk considering pulling X out of Europe

According to foreign media INSIDER report, people familiar with the matter revealed that Elon Musk is increasingly frustrated that his X platform (formerly Twitter) must comply with the EU’s Digital Services Act. Elon Musk considered “simply canceling” the availability of the X platform in Europe or blocking access to local users.

Elon Musk has also hinted in recent weeks that Platform X may exit Europe to avoid being subject to new regulations issued by the European Commission.

People familiar with the matter revealed that although Elon Musk has not withdrawn the X platform from any country, there are basically no employees in Europe because offices in Paris, Madrid, Berlin and other places have been closed. However, offices in Dublin and London are still open. At present, the UK is no longer a member of the EU and has proposed that large platforms bear “separate obligations.”

Attached is the summary:

European regulators had issued a “stern warning” to Elon Musk earlier this month that illegal content and disinformation began to spread on the X platform during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Elon Musk faces fines of up to 6% of the company’s annual revenue if he doesn’t comply with European rules on illegal content.

EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said in a letter to Elon Musk on October 10 that his office had found “signs” that some groups were spreading misinformation, “violence and terrorism” on X ” content and urged the billionaire to respond within 24 hours. Elon Musk responded to Brayton by saying that Platform X’s policy is that all content be “open source and transparent.”

Before the X platform, Threads, one of the competitors of the X platform, was also subject to EU regulations and was unable to provide services in Europe. Meta has previously stated that it will work to launch Threads in the EU, but before that it needs to wait for regulatory approval to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.
