As electric vehicles continue to develop, related technologies are also advancing rapidly. Today, Huawei Technologies’ patent for “On-board Charging Device for Electric Vehicles and System and Method for Wireless Charging of Electric Vehicles” was published.

According to the patent application, current electric vehicle charging technologies are generally classified as on-board charging (OBC), off-board charging and wireless charging (WC). The patent provides a solution to the problem of low integration of traditional wireless charging and traditional on-board charging systems.

The patent abstract shows that the patent is for an on-board charging device for electric vehicles and that the on-board charging device exhibits higher power density at a significantly lower cost. For the specific configuration of the on-board charging device, a total of

  • The main input, including the power factor correction (PFC) converter.
  • Mains-side DC / AC converter.
  • Transformer with mains-side coil and battery-side coil.
  • Battery-side AC/DC converter.
  • Battery connector.
  • one or more bypass switches for electrically connecting said mains-side converter to said battery-side converter when closed

Wherein the transformer is used to magnetically couple to the TX pad of an external wireless power transmitter (WPT) such that the mains side coil and the battery side coil receive electrical power. When the bypass switch is closed and the transformer is magnetically coupled to the WPT, power is transmitted to the battery connector via the battery-side converter and the mains-side converter.
