Huawei and Samsung reach patent cross-licensing agreement

Following Huawei’s announcement of a global patent cross-licensing agreement with OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communication Co. on essential patent technologies such as 5G standards, Huawei and Samsung Group have also reached a cross-licensing agreement on their respective standard-essential patent packages, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Huawei introduced that nearly 20 global manufacturers, including Samsung, as well as smart vehicles, networks and other industries, have licensed Huawei patents in the past year, and a total of 350 million 5G handsets and 15 million connected vehicles are expected to be licensed to Huawei in 2022.

The global patent cross-licensing agreement announced by Huawei and OPPO covers the basic patents of cellular communication standards, including 5G standards. Under the agreement, OPPO paid a fee to license Huawei’s advanced 5G technology. At the same time, Huawei also received the required OPPO patent licenses for OPPO’s research related to wireless standards.

Patent cross-licensing usually refers to two or more patent owners granting each other a license to implement their respective patents under certain conditions. Patent cross-licensing reflects the parties’ respect for intellectual property rights, and at the same time reduces the cost of patent usage, which is conducive to promoting technology exchange and R&D, and providing better products to the market.

China has now become an important patent contributor in the global information and communication technology field. Taking 5G communication as an example, the proportion of both proposals and granted declared patents of Chinese enterprises accepted by international related organizations has exceeded 30%.
