Manning up to the competition, HP is getting ready to launch a folding screen notebook, this is a move that Lenovo has already taken with the launch of the ThinkPad X1 Fold. This foldable notebook from HP will use a flexible LG OLED screen and might be launched later this year.

This flexible LG OLED display was showcased by LG at the CES expo earlier this year. Notably, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold that was launched two years ago also used a folding OLED display from LG. LG plans to produce as many as 10,000 flexible OLED displays, production of these folding displays will start in the third quarter of the year.

After letting go of its smartphone business, LG has now fully shifted its attention to the production of various displays that are used on multiple devices. The HP foldable notebook will have a 4K foldable display that can unfold from 11 inches to 17 inches. The film to be used on this folding notebook will be supplied by SK IE Technology. This display will very likely be folded inward as we see on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, this will be to help protect the screen from scratches or direct impact to the screen.

HP’s folding display will be an upgrade from Lenovo’s foldable notebook launched two years ago. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold has a 2K foldable display, and a 13.3-inch touch foldable display. This display has a form factor that can easily convert from a laptop to a tablet and finally to a Desktop computer. Apple is as well rumoured to launch a similar device with a large foldable display. Who are these types of devices designed for? We will wait to see how the HP foldable notebook will be accepted into the market.
