Honda today launched its first electric lawn mower prototype that supports autonomous driving.
The prototype is called the Honda Autonomous Work Mower (AWM), and Honda says it successfully conducted a proof-of-concept test of the AWM at a commercial landscaping company in the United States earlier this year. Next year the company will launch a pilot project to test AWM in the field.
The AWM can be driven manually or run in automatic mode. Operators set up automatic operation by using “teaching” mode, in which the mower uses a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to create a mowing route map. AWM can learn multiple mowing routes and patterns and save them to a cloud server.
Once the route is saved, the operator can initiate the AWM’s automatic operating mode in “Replay” mode. After placing the AWM in the starting position, the operator uses a tablet or smartphone to download a map of the designated mowing route. AWM will then start running automatically and mow the grass according to the map route.
Honda says its AWM can maintain a straight line on hills and rough terrain, has dual-motor traction control to prevent tire spin, and has four radar and four lidar sensors for obstacle detection.
AWM automatically reduces blade speed at low speeds and loads to reduce power consumption. At high loads, AWM automatically reduces speed to prevent grass clogging and incomplete mowing.
It is noted that AWM is also a zero-turn lawn mower, which is a lawn mower that can turn in place with a turning radius of zero, so it can mow the grass more flexibly, especially when there are Obstacles or zigzag edges on lawns.
