The National Standards Information Public Service Platform shows that the national standard “Information Technology Chinese Coding Character Set” is categorized and implemented by 339 (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), and the competent department is the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The main drafting units include China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute, Beijing Beifang Founder Electronics Co.

The first edition of “Information Technology Chinese Character Set” was released in 2000, and the first revision was made in 2005. After 17 years, the Information Technology Chinese Character Encoding Set has been revised again.

The new version of the mandatory national standard GB 18030-2022 will be implemented on August 1, 2023. GB 18030-2022 contains a total of 87,887 Chinese characters, an increase of more than 17,000 rare Chinese characters compared to the previous version.
