Gurman: Apple moves up new product launch to January, aims to boost 1Q earnings

Apple’s launch in January of this year, which included the HomePod 2, the 14/16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, and the new Mac Mini, could mean that no new hardware may be launched for the 2023 Spring Special, or for the 2nd quarter of this year.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman writes in the latest Power On newsletter that “there aren’t the same number of new products coming out in the second quarter of this year”. The spring special event saw the introduction of the Mac Studio, Studio Display, and the iPhone SE with 5G support.

Gurman believes Apple is releasing new products earlier this year in January, rather than waiting until the spring special event in March, because Apple wants to boost its Q1 2023 earnings. Wall Street now apparently expects first-quarter revenue of $122.2 billion, which is down from a year ago but not “too bad”, while the second quarter is expected to be flat at $97.5 billion.
