According to two people familiar with the matter, Google has postponed the release of its first fully customized chip until 2025, which was originally planned to be equipped with the Pixel series smartphones released next year.

Google’s latest Pixel 7 series smartphones are powered by its self-developed Tensor G2 chip, a semi-custom chip that Google and Samsung collaborated on.
Google had planned to release the chip, internally code-named Redondo, next year to replace a chip it is currently co-designing with Samsung, the sources said. However, because “things didn’t go according to plan,” Google has decided to continue working with Samsung for another year and wait until 2025 to launch a new fully custom chip, internally codenamed Laguna.
In addition, sources also revealed that Google also plans to transfer the production of Tensor chips from Samsung to TSMC, while Laguna chips will be based on TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process, which is currently the most advanced chip manufacturing process in the world.
It was previously reported that some design parameters of Google’s third-generation self-developed processor Tensor G3 were exposed early last month. It is reported that the chip will use a unique 9-core CPU architecture, and the GPU will also add ray tracing.
