Netflix, Disney+ and other streaming services have been hugely popular over the past few years, all thanks to the epidemic pandemic. While their growth is now slowing, on-demand services are the future of content consumption. Still, there are plenty of people who prefer to watch live TV over on-demand content. That’s where Google YouTube TV comes in, allowing users to stream live TV channels over the Internet, a service that launched in 2017 to replace traditional cable TV services in the United States. YouTube TV now has an active user base of more than 5 million.
YouTube TV now has more than 5 million paid and “trial” subscribers, confirmed Neal Mohan, YouTube’s chief product officer. That means the streaming TV service has gained an average of 1 million subscribers per year since its launch. It’s unclear what percentage of subscribers are trial subscribers, with YouTube TV trials ranging from seven days to a few weeks, after which users will need to subscribe to at least the basic plan ($55 per month) to continue using the service.
YouTube TV has become the largest TV streaming service in the U.S., well ahead of Hulu’s 4.1 million subscribers. Google previously revealed in Q3 2020 that YouTube TV has more than 3 million subscribers, a number that excludes “trial” subscriptions and more accurately represents the number of paid subscribers to the service.
