Google today announced that it will begin offering support for the Matter protocol for its 2020 Nest Thermostat smart thermostat models. This means the smart thermostat can be controlled via the Apple Home app and Siri on iPhones and other devices.

In a blog post, Google said that Matter support will be pushed to the Nest Thermostat via an automatic OTA update starting today and that the push will be completed in the next few weeks.
The matter is the universal smart home protocol standard that supports Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and other smart home platforms. This means that with the upgrade, Nest will finally be able to support Apple HomeKit.
Google says that in the Home app, users can adjust Nest Thermostat temperatures, change thermostat modes and more. iPhone users will need to update to iOS 16.4 or later to use this feature, The Verge notes.
According to The Verge, Google is “exploring” adding Matter support to the original Nest Learning Thermostat model, but for now, it’s still not compatible with Apple HomeKit.
