Google Launched Credential Manager, Android 14 Apps Will Easily Support Passkey Keys

Google announced in a developer blog last week that Credential Manager will be officially opened to the public on November 1st. This is a new Android-specific API for storage. Username and password combinations, Passkey and other credentials. The credential manager, which launched in developer preview a few months ago, integrates Passkey biometric authentication, traditional passwords, and federated logins in Android phones under one platform.

This will allow apps to provide better authentication support in Android 14. Using Credential Manager, apps can allow users to easily biometric login through Passkey. This means users don’t need to remember login information, resulting in a more seamless login experience. Third-party password managers such as 1Password can also integrate the API, providing a smoother experience when using alternatives to Google Password Manager.

In a separate blog post last week, Google wrote that it was deprecating several authentication APIs so that developers could simply call the credential manager to authenticate users. Hopefully this will make things easier and more likely to be used by third-party apps.

What is Passkey? Passkey can replace traditional passwords with the device’s own authentication method. Users can log in to various services through Face ID on an iPhone, a fingerprint sensor on an Android phone, or Windows Hello on a PC.

Passkey is based on WebAuthn (or Web Authentication) technology, and when a Passkey is created, two different Passkeys are generated: one stored by the website or service, and another stored by the device used to authenticate the identity.

If the Passkey is stored on the device, what happens if it gets damaged or lost? Since Passkey works across multiple devices, there may be backups available. Many services that support Passkey will also re-authenticate mobile numbers or email addresses, or can also use hardware security Passkey.
