Google is developing a “Timeline Location” feature for Android’s Settings app, similar to the feature on Google Maps, which displays a user’s location history in the form of a timeline.
According to information discovered by tipster Nail Sadykov, Google Play Services has a hidden feature that can be opened to see the “Timeline” option in the settings, which contains four options, summary is as follows:
Your Timeline" for viewing the history of location and course of action
Export Timeline data" for exporting json files for backup
Delete Timeline data" for deleting timeline data
Encrypted backup" for transferring the timeline to another device
This feature is currently under development and is not yet available in the stable version of Android. Based on the current functionality alone, this seems to be a local-only alternative to the Google Maps Timeline feature. This new feature could provide users with a more private way to manage location history, but there are privacy concerns built directly into Android.
