Google Chrome will alert to show password strength values

Google is working on a new feature for Chrome to help users set strong passwords directly on the browser. Google Chrome on all platforms will display a password indicator to show how strong the password is. The new password indicator feature will be built into the browser, which means users won’t have to rely on third-party solutions.

Browser extensions such as LastPass and 1Password are currently guiding users to set strong passwords, but many users do not understand and use these extensions. Therefore, a built-in password indicator would be more convenient. In addition, users will feel more secure when using the built-in solution.

Leopeva64 found the “password strength indicator” flag in the latest version of Google Chrome, which is evidence that Google is actively developing this feature. As described in the flag, the password indicator pops up when the current password is registered or changed, alerting you to the health of your password. Google’s description of the feature is as follows.

The feature is expected to work on all desktop platforms, including macOS, Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux. when the feature is enabled, Google Chrome will warn users when they enter a simple password that contains only a numeric value. A password indicator may guide users through the process of setting a strong password.

Meanwhile, major technology companies such as Microsoft, Google and Apple are working to create “passwordless” solutions to eliminate the need for passwords. A “passwordless” solution would mean that users would have to use biometrics for authentication. Google is working on a “passkey” that could replace passwords in Chrome.
