Google is developing a text-to-speech function for the reading mode of the Chrome browser, which allows the browser to read the content of web pages aloud.
According to X user Leopeva64, the feature is currently only available in Google’s experimental version of Chrome Canary. When viewing an article in Read Mode, tap the play button at the top to have Google read the text to you. Leopeva64 also shared a video on Reddit demonstrating this feature, which shows that the feature is still a work in progress, as the voice sounds mechanical and reads the title “summary” as a single letter, instead of reading the word directly.
For what it’s worth, Chrome’s Reading Mode is currently a hidden feature that needs to be manually enabled. It is noticed that Google also lags behind rival Microsoft’s Edge browser in this regard, which already provides a powerful text-to-speech function.
