Google Chrome tests new feature that boosts battery life by 10 percent

Google Chrome is known to be a resource hog, not only taking up a lot of memory, but also putting battery life to the test.

Chrome developers must be aware of this problem, as Chrome Unboxed reports that in the latest Chrome Dev and Canary (105 and higher), Google has added a new experimental option called “Quick intensive throttling after loading”.

The feature is described as

Activate intensive throttling after 10 seconds for pages loaded in the background instead of the default 5 minutes. Intensive throttling will limit wake-ups, including settingTimeout and setInterval tasks with high nesting levels, and delayed scheduler.postTask tasks to 1 per minute.

Google writes in the official feature expectations that

This feature is expected to extend battery life. When all tabs are hidden and silent, it is expected to increase device life by about 10%.

IT House has learned that Google has re-implemented the pre-rendering mechanism in Chrome 103 to significantly improve page loading speed, reduce resource usage, and improve code complexity.
