Google recently announced that its browser Chrome will launch a new website permission option. Users will be able to choose “only this time” to authorize the website to use their location, camera, microphone and other functions so that the website can provide a better network experience according to the user’s preferences. The feature, rolling out in Chrome 116 for desktop, covers the three most commonly used permissions: geolocation, camera, and microphone.
Currently, when a website asks users to allow access to a camera, location, microphone, etc., Chrome browser only provides two options: deny and allow. Soon, a third button will be added: “Allow this time only”. The other two buttons change to “Allow Every Visit” and “Do Not Allow”.
It is noticed that Apple Safari and Firefox browsers already have similar functions. Google says the “Allow this time only” option gives users more control because some users don’t want to make a permanent decision.
Google also said that the new option will make more people willing to authorize. However, website developers should also provide the necessary background information and explain the benefits of allowing access to specific permissions.
Chrome version 116 will be released on August 15, 2023. At that time, only three permission types on the desktop will be affected. Other functions and mobile devices will not be affected by this change.
