Google brings new icons to SMS, Phone, and Contacts apps on Android

In addition to previewing the ten improvements coming to Google Messages, Google has also announced new icons for the SMS/RCS app, Phone and Contacts. Google has launched a new message icon with a messages.android_20221018_01_RC00.phone.openbeta _dynamic version. The new version of the icon is also available on Wear OS and you can sign up for the beta version here.

Comparison of the old and new icons: old version on the left, new version on the right

Compared to the current icon set, these icons may stand out less if they are placed on a light background rather than a dark blue one. Overall, they are less modern and more stylized. Google has therefore made adjustments.

As expected, the blue icons are placed on a very unobtrusive light background. Google has used a simplified logo and the theme icons are better and more easily recognizable. Google has also updated the app icons “to better reflect today’s modern messaging experience and to have the same look as many of Google’s other products.” You can take a closer look at the new icon below (it’s the one in the middle)
