According to Reuters and other media reported today, Google Devices and Services senior vice president Rick Osterloh said at the annual Google India conference held today at local time, the company will start production of the Pixel 8 series of smartphones in India, is expected to start shipping in bulk from next year.
The executive said, “India is a key market for Pixel smartphones and we are committed to bringing the best hardware and underlying built-in software features to the people of India.”
He also revealed that Google is currently working with partners in India and abroad as a first step in the company’s efforts to expand production in order to meet the local demand for Pixel devices. “More importantly, this is a big step forward in Google’s commitment to India.” Google has made India the largest user market for a number of its services and has committed to investing more than $10 billion in the country over the next few years (Currently around RMB 73.2 billion).
Google parent company Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai earlier this month in the X platform (formerly Twitter) announced that Google is working with HP to produce Chromebooks in India. Sundar Pichai said that this is the first batch of Chromebooks to be made in India, which will make it easier for Indian students to get access to affordable and secure computing.
Additionally, according to a new report published by market research firm Counterpoint Research, India has cumulatively manufactured more than 2 billion cell phones during the period 2014-2022, at a CAGR of 23%, driven by the ‘Make in India’ development program.
