General Motors will begin selling the battery-powered Chevrolet Blazer next year to challenge the Tesla Model Y, currently, the best-selling electric SUV in the U.S. GM said Monday that an electric version of the Blazer will be available in the summer of 2023, following the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the $30,000 Equinox will be available later this year.
The electric version of the Pathfinder will use Ultium batteries developed over several years in partnership with South Korea’s LG. GM has previously said that with a dedicated Ultium platform, its cars will be more profitable, easier to build and will have a longer range.
This is a big statement for us,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. “The Silverado is the first of its kind. the Blazer is the next piece of this puzzle. We’re seeing 35 percent of consumers considering an electric vehicle. It will have broad appeal.”
Late last month, Bank of America Securities analyst John Murphy said in his Car Wars report that the three vehicles could allow GM to outpace all of its competitors, including market leader Tesla, in electric vehicle sales by 2025. Murphy predicts that by then, GM will have a share of more than 14 percent of the U.S. electric vehicle market, with Ford Motor Co. slightly ahead of Tesla with a share of more than 10 percent.
