General Motors recently launched the open-source software protocol uProtocol, and invited other automakers and developers to jointly improve car software. GM has also joined the Eclipse Foundation, “the world’s largest open source software organization.”
General Motors created the uProtocol protocol to simplify the interconnection between automotive systems, the cloud, and mobile devices.
Frank Ghenassia, Chief Architect of General Motors, in the press release, reads as follows: “Not only the automotive industry, but other related industries can also adopt a similar software sharing approach to achieve greater industry interoperability.”
General Motors plans to launch the Ultifi software platform later this year, providing OTA updates and in-vehicle subscription services to increase user brand reliance.
