According to Reuters, Andreas Mundt, head of the Cartel Office of the German antitrust regulator, warned that AI may enhance the market power of large technology companies and regulators should be wary of any anti-competitive behaviour.
Mundt highlighted regulators’ concerns that tech giants with vast troves of user data could gain a competitive advantage in new technologies used in smart homes, web searches, online advertising, cars and many other products and services.
“It is crucial for competition authorities that this new technology does not further strengthen the dominance of large companies,” Mundt told Reuters in an interview. “The danger is very high because AI first requires two Things: powerful servers and lots of data. Big Internet companies have both.”
Google and Microsoft are competitors in the field of artificial intelligence. The former has developed the Bard AI chat robot, etc., and the latter has invested heavily in OpenAI.
