General Motors plans to launch more than 15 pure electric models based on the Ultium platform in China by 2025 to catch up with the world’s largest electric vehicle market leader, foreign media reported.
By the end of this year, SAIC-GM will have two Ultium plants in Shanghai and Wuhan, which will significantly increase production capacity for pure electric vehicles based on the platform, GM said. The company also said it will produce 1 million electric vehicles annually in China by 2025.
GM’s Ultium platform is the industry’s first hyperscale electric vehicle platform designed with flexibility and modularity at its core, providing the power, range and performance to make virtually every vehicle an electric vehicle.
Vehicles using the Ultium platform include the Cruise Origin AV, BrightDrop commercial vehicle, GMC HUMMER EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and the Cadillac CELESTIQ ultra-luxury flagship vehicle, which was announced in October.
On September 14, 2021, GM officially introduced the Ultium platform to the Chinese market. Deliveries of the Cadillac Lyriq EV, the company’s first Ultium-based model introduced to China, began in September of this year, following its launch in China in July.
Tesla is leading the electric vehicle market in China, where GM is trying to catch up with Tesla. In the third quarter of 2022, GM sales in China reached about 629,900 units, up 1 percent year-on-year.
